![]() Weekend again, so build time. After starting the painting in the week, Dave looked in to whether we were going to be able to spray when it comes to the Big Push as it seemed a bit gloopy. Apparently, the manufacturer recommends professional sprayguns only, so we're going to try it anyway with the one we already have. But, we did find out you're not supposed to apply it below 5 degrees either... it's 6.8 today Objectives for today were to get the doors on and start on the roof boards. Getting doors out of the shed was a major expedition, given how slippery the deck is (which is why we added some Ronseal Deck Cleaner to the Screwfix click and collect order at lunchtime...) but we managed that just about safely. The right hand door didn't want to drop on its hinges and there was too much space below the door for the door lifter to be useful, so we man and woman handled it into place then it slid on. The second one went on a little easier. They even shut :)
So now the division of labour was me me painting the doors and Dave popping on the roof boards. Actually, the first thing Dave needed to do was screw in the purlins, because we didn't want to use 2 x 70 mm screws in at an angle per purlin as instructed and we didn't have long enough screws last time out. We decided to use a single 150 mm screw driven vertically down to secure them in place. I started masking up the glass and painting while Dave did that, and with a bit of mallet bashing to knock down some uneven bits it was time for him to start putting on the boards. It was handy having Dave up the ladder so he could paint the top of the door for me. I ended up lying on the grass to paint the bottom. It wasn't going to work with Dave trying to get past me and my wet paint carrying roofboards, so he went in for lunch and I carried on painting. We swapped back when I went in after finishing the first door, having worked out how to stop it flapping in the wind. Dave needed a hand to unwrap the timber pile, then he got on with it, plying his trusty new battery powered nail gun. My first job after lunch was to finish the masking tape (fiddly job, I hate it - "Frog tape" - good contrast with the sage green...). I'd only done the outside pane on the RH door and had to break my stride to get the inside masked (I was going to leave it to be whatever colour we go for inside, but changed my mind to have the doors green both sides). So I masked the outer side of the window and the other door, both inside and out, and started on the LH door. I wobbled myself up on to the bench to do the top edge flinching whenever the nail gun went off! Got myself down again (knee better but still not capable of stepping up) and carried on painting merrily away. Roof boards were progressing really quickly, so I stopped painting every now and then to hand up some boards. Bit of a snafu discovered at this point - the first board Dave fitted wasn't straight to the front of the cabin, so as the line drifted off, the nails started missing the purlin. Not a happy boy. The only solution was to take them off and start again. Mallet, pry bars and pliers to cut off the nails protruding from the top of the purlins and he got on with it, without that much swearing either. I carried on painting merrily away. Once Dave started again, we did a double check that the first one was straight this time and he started again. It was starting to get dark so he stopped after doing the sections over the eaves. It was also starting to get colder, so we also decided to leave the window for a (slightly) warmer day. We wrapped up the remaining timber, put the tarp back on after Dave handing me down the "yet to be de-nailed" boards to go back up tomorrow. We also put the roofing felt in the cabin so we don't have to negotiate the deck again tomorrow. We have Tomas tomorrow (probably) so if Dave can get the boards on quickly in the morning, he can help us get the insulation up and hopefully we can get the membrane and roofing felt on as well in the afternoon. That's the plan anyway. In the meantime off to Screwfix and the click and collect order.
