![]() It's been a while... Christmas has come and gone, lockdown is back. It's been too wet and cold to do much outside, as well as it being too cold for the preservative to be applied to the cabin. However, with the thermometer creeping up to a balmy 7 degrees, we thought we'd better get back to it. Subtle difference in the top picture, but Dave painted the window frame and put a second coat around the exterior door window frames, so we can at least get rid of the masking tape before it becomes impossible to remove.
Next step was to get the floor insulation down. Three big sheets of it, but unlike the roof insulation, it's extremely light. It's designed to be cut to size then hung between the floor bearers on plastic clips that you push in to the side of the sheets. First job was to empty the cabin of the various materials that had been stored in there since we last worked on it, at which point we noticed that the roofing felt rolls said "Do not store flat"... OK, one of them was a little squashed, but I don't think any lasting harm was done... We measured up and cut the first insulation slice (being careful to avoid a repeat performance of the aluminium bench) then offered it up (down?) to the gap to test for size. It was a tad on the large side, so we found another gap for that a few bearers down. Second time was better, but although we were cutting to size, the clips that push in to the sides of the sheets were adding a couple of mm either side, so after plying the mallet a few times, we started cutting slightly smaller than the gaps so it fitted without being persuaded by the mallet. We also had to be careful to not slip the insulation too far under the walls, or it would poke out past where the end cap for the bearers was supposed to go. That happened a couple of times, so we had to re-fit them. The last couple were interesting, because we couldn't stand on the insulation boards and didn't trust our ability not to accidentally step off a bearer. I was thinking I could balance it, then Dave appeared with a scaffolding plank or 3 so we could have a safe space to stand on. We got the last insulation panels in place, so just the short fillers to do now. That will be a lot easier when the floorboards are down and we can move around more freely, so I think Dave might try to tackle that in the week if it isn't too cold and wet.
