Tomas spent alot of time today sifting stuff in his/Abby's old bedroom to make enough space for me to start dismantling furniture. He needed to get my chair out of the way to make space, so he dismantled it for removal (since building Dave's storage shelves in the "corridor" room it's quite tight for moving large objects in and out) and put it in to the cabin for me, in pieces. While the chair was in pieces, it seemed a good opportunity to change the gas strut (I've been getting fed up with gently descending 4 inches at random intervals...). The strut wouldn't pull out, and by the time Dave had thoroughly checked that it wouldn't come out courtesy of the Persuader (while it was snowing), the modesty cover didn't enjoy the attention and 3 casters fell out, and there was definitely no movement in the gas strut (but not in a good way...). Time to bin it and get a new one.
So once Tomas was done clearing out it was time for me to bite the bullet. I found a spare desk leg with a flange (yes, we have spare desk legs knocking around - don't ask) and looked to start dismantling the join between the L-shaped desk and the short extension. I unscrewed all the desk side screws (so I thought) and screwed the leg in to support the extension (so I thought). Time to extract the drawer set from under the desk - it had a good clean, but could still do with a bit more - and in doing so, found the fingers that had dropped off Wall-E (long story) and popped them back up in his base for Tomas to remodel. We moved the drawers outside, then came back in to dismantle the desk. Screws removed, and outline of the supporting blocks traced, it was time to get the top off (it's a solid cherry desktop we got from a reclaimation yard over 25 years ago, so not light...). Wouldn't budge. Short version is that the 2 screws I'd put in to hold the new leg were between the sections, rather than into the short one, so I took those out and repositioned the leg. Still wouldn't budge. Dave went underneath and managed to spot the screw I'd missed and started unscrewing it. The top lifted but the screw didn't come out, so we held the top clear while Dave (eventually) came out, then Tomas slid the top off the back of the legs and hey presto - two sets of legs, one desktop and a recalicitrant screw to deal with. The top was relatively easy to slide through the house, then we used a couple of matress straps to give us good enough purchase to carry it into the back garden. Dave sorted out the sticky-uppy screw while Tomas and I did that. We then reassembled the desk in the cabin, after having a few issues persuading it to turn 90 degrees to the vertical, and I crabbed it in to place while Tomas steered. I had a desk! We then brought in the drawer unit (as it was snowing again) and started bringing my stuff in for work - exciting times! I also extracted an extension lead from the old study so we could plug in the heater. Tomas helped me move my essential stuff in and then it was pretty much just reassembling my desk setup. The last things Tomas brought out were my old office chair from Seacourt Tower (that I'd snaffled for Charlie) and a rug to protect the floor from its casters. I found the heater manual and between us, Dave and I got it working (we do need to drop the temperature on the P1 programme though) and I got to unpacking, suggesting that perhaps a small fizz would be in order. I started connecting everything up while Dave found a nice cold bottle and a couple of glasses. Just as he came back, I connected the network cable and hey presto! - no network :( After having a consiliatory sip of Prosecco, Dave asked whether the network was plugged in at the house end... d'oh. Turns out he actually meant the wifi extender, but he went in to plug the cable in to the switch in our bedroom and by the time he got back, I was a very happy bunny :) Dave pulled the extension lead around enough to get the lights on as well, so I carried on setting stuff up, ready for work tomorrow. So, why not wait for a cold snap with snow flurries to move out into the garden?
